Atomic-scale modeling of crack branching in oxide glass

چکیده
Brittle oxide glasses can easily break into fragments because of crack branching during fracture. The fundamental mechanism underlying this common phenomenon remains controversial. In study, using atomic-scale simulations with three independent force fields, we directly observe in silica glass. critical speed at which the branches increases far field loading. atomic revealed that brittle glass is triggered by nucleation two or cavities different directions ahead running tip. We compared simulation results to observed on fracture surface a fiber broken under high stress.

متن کاملAtomic Branching in Molecules
A graph theoretic measure of extended atomic branching is defined that accounts for the effects of all atoms in the molecule, giving higher weight to the nearest neighbors. It is based on the counting of all substructures in which an atom takes part in a molecule. We prove a theorem that permits the exact calculation of this measure based on the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the adjacency mat...
متن کاملAtomic-scale modeling of self-positioning nanostructures
Atomic-scale finite element procedure for modeling of self-positioning nanostructures is developed. Our variant of the atomic-scale finite element method is based on a meshless approach and on the Tersoff interatomic potential function. The developed algorithm is used for determination of equilibrium configuration of atoms after nanostructure self-positioning. Dependency of the curvature radius...
متن کاملAtomic-Scale Modeling of Nanoelectronic Devices
As device features near atomic dimensions, simulations of electrical currents need to be based on a quantummechanical description of the system rather than a classical one. New phenomena appear which can be exploited for novel device characteristics, but also fundamental challenges arise when the influence of single defects can have devastating effects. From a metrological perspective, the very...
متن کاملGlass-blown spherical microcells for chip-scale atomic devices
This paper demonstrates spherical vapor cells intended to be used in chip-scale atomic devices. A micro glass blowing process is introduced, n which multiple glass spheres are simultaneously shaped on the top of a silicon wafer and subsequently filled with rubidium. In the presented abrication process, an array of cylindrical cavities is first etched in silicon. Next, a thin glass wafer is anod...
